VAT on gold and silver in the UK

Investment-grade gold is VAT-free. Silver is not. What that means for the price you pay.

The UK operates an Investment Gold exemption. Gold that meets the definition — broadly, investment-grade bars of an accepted form and fineness, and gold coins minted after 1800 that are or have been legal tender and are above 900 fineness — is exempt from VAT.

Gold

Most of the gold coins people buy to hold — Britannias, Sovereigns, Krugerrands, Maple Leafs, Eagles — fall within the exemption. No VAT is added.

Silver

Silver has no equivalent exemption. It is standard-rated, so VAT applies. Where we sell silver, the price shown already includes VAT — there is no surprise at checkout.

On our site

Every product carries a VAT-treatment flag. The product page states whether an item is exempt or VAT-inclusive, and the price breakdown shows any VAT as a separate line.

This is a general summary of how VAT applies to these products, not tax advice for your situation.
