About the 2023 Tudor Beasts Yale of Beaufort 1/4oz Gold Coin
The Royal Tudor Beasts are a series of ten coins inspired by the heraldic statues on the Moat Bridge at Hampton Court Palace, which celebrate the ancestry of Henry VIII and Jane Seymour. The Yale of Beaufort is the second release, issued in 2023. The yale is a mythical creature whose horns could swivel in any direction. It came into Tudor heraldry through the Beaufort family of Lady Margaret Beaufort, the mother of Henry VII.
This coin is struck from a quarter of a troy ounce (7.78 g) of 999.9 fine gold, 22 millimetres across, with a face value of twenty five pounds. The reverse is by David Lawrence, who designed the whole series.
The quarter ounce is the more affordable way into the series, and a lot of collectors build the full set in this size. As with any fractional coin, the premium per gram is higher than on the one ounce version, because the cost of striking barely changes with the amount of gold.
