Bitcoin vs Gold: Which Protects Wealth Better?

People often ask whether Bitcoin is the new gold. We sell gold, so read this knowing that, but we have tried to give both a fair hearing.

Two very different histories

Gold has been used as money and a store of value for thousands of years, across almost every civilisation. Bitcoin appeared in 2009. One has survived countless crises; the other is still establishing what role it will play over the long term.

Scarcity

  • Gold is scarce in nature. New supply from mining adds only a small fraction to the existing stock each year, and finding new deposits is getting harder.
  • Bitcoin has a supply capped by its code at 21 million coins, released on a set schedule.

Both are scarce. Gold’s scarcity is physical; Bitcoin’s is mathematical.

Volatility

Gold’s price moves, sometimes sharply, but Bitcoin has historically been far more volatile, with falls of more than half its value on several occasions. For someone who may need their money at a particular time, that volatility matters a great deal.

Holding it

  • Physical gold sits in your hand or your vault. It needs no password, no internet and no company to keep working.
  • Bitcoin depends on keeping private keys safe. Lose the keys and the coins are gone; hold them on an exchange and you rely on that exchange.

Counterparty risk

Gold coins you hold yourself carry no counterparty risk: they do not depend on any institution remaining solvent. Bitcoin held in your own wallet also avoids institutions, but Bitcoin held through a platform does not, and platforms have failed.

Tax in the UK

British legal tender gold coins are exempt from Capital Gains Tax for UK residents. Gains on cryptoassets are generally chargeable. See VAT and Capital Gains Tax on gold.

A balanced view

They are different tools. Gold is a long established, physical store of value with modest volatility. Bitcoin is a newer, digital asset with a very different risk profile. Some people hold both. Nothing here is investment advice, and neither asset is guaranteed to rise.
