About the 1oz Krugerrand

The Krugerrand was first struck in 1967 and was the first coin designed to put a precise ounce of gold into a private buyer’s hands. At one point it accounted for the overwhelming majority of gold coins held worldwide, and every bullion coin struck since owes it something.

It is 22 carat, alloyed with copper, which makes it noticeably harder wearing and gives it a warm orange cast next to a Britannia. The coin weighs 33.93 grams in total because the alloy is added on top of, not instead of, the full ounce of gold inside.

Paul Kruger appears on the obverse and a springbok on the reverse. For a UK buyer the thing to know is that it is not British legal tender, so it does not carry the Capital Gains Tax exemption that a sovereign or Britannia does.

Why choose a one ounce coin?

One ounce coins are the cheapest way to own metal by weight, because the cost of striking a coin barely changes with the amount of metal in it.

  • The lowest premium per gram of any size
  • Traded everywhere, so selling it on is straightforward
  • One coin rather than a handful, so easier to store
  • Suits a larger sum put into metal in one go
Not British legal tender, so no Capital Gains Tax exemption for UK residents. Investment gold carries no VAT. We are dealers rather than tax advisers, so your own position is yours to check.

Questions people ask

Is this investment gold?

Yes. It is struck from 916.7 fine gold, which meets the HMRC definition of investment gold.

Does it carry VAT?

No. Investment gold is exempt from VAT in the UK, so the price you see is the price.

Is it Capital Gains Tax exempt?

No. It is not UK legal tender, so it does not carry the exemption that a sovereign or a Britannia does.

How is it supplied?

In a protective capsule, sent in discreet packaging that says nothing about what is inside.

What if the price moves before I pay?

The price on this page is the metal at this moment. When you send us your order we confirm the final figure with you and hold it while you pay, so you are never charged a number you have not seen.

Will I get the exact coin in the photograph?

Not necessarily. Coins are supplied in mixed years unless you ask for a particular one. The specification is the same either way.
