About the Gold Sovereign
The sovereign in its modern form dates to 1817, and the reverse has carried Benedetto Pistrucci’s St George and the dragon for most of the two centuries since. It is probably the most recognised gold coin in the world, and certainly the easiest to sell again in this country. Walk into any dealer in Britain with a sovereign and they will know exactly what it is worth.
It is 22 carat rather than pure gold, alloyed with copper, which is why it survives being handled. That copper is also why sovereigns often look slightly warmer and redder than a Britannia. The gold content is 7.3224 grams, a fraction under a quarter of an ounce.
The practical argument for sovereigns over one ounce coins is that you can sell part of your holding. If you need a few hundred pounds you sell one sovereign, rather than breaking up a coin worth several thousand.

Questions people ask
Is this investment gold?
Yes. It is struck from 916.7 fine gold, which meets the HMRC definition of investment gold.
Does it carry VAT?
No. Investment gold is exempt from VAT in the UK, so the price you see is the price.
Is it Capital Gains Tax exempt?
Yes, for UK residents, because it is UK legal tender. Your own position is yours to check, and we are dealers rather than tax advisers.
How is it supplied?
In a protective capsule, sent in discreet packaging that says nothing about what is inside.
What if the price moves before I pay?
The price on this page is the metal at this moment. When you send us your order we confirm the final figure with you and hold it while you pay, so you are never charged a number you have not seen.
Will I get the exact coin in the photograph?
Not necessarily. Coins are supplied in mixed years unless you ask for a particular one. The specification is the same either way.
