About the Quarter Sovereign
The quarter sovereign is a modern addition. The Royal Mint revived the denomination in 2009 and has struck it every year since. At 13.5 millimetres across it is smaller than a five pence piece, and it weighs just under two grams.
It carries the same Pistrucci St George and the same 22 carat alloy as its larger relatives, and that copper content gives many of them a distinctly rosy colour.
Be clear eyed about the premium. Small coins cost almost as much to produce as big ones, so the quarter carries the highest premium in the sovereign family by some margin. It is a good gift and a good starting point, and a poor way to buy gold in quantity.
